For those of us who experiment with CSS, it’s an exciting time. The advent of CSS Grid and Flexbox have opened up a whole new world of page layout possibilities.

And one of the more interesting uses for these tools is their integration within news and magazine-style websites. They often have more complex and unique layout requirements than other genres. It has led to some very creative solutions.

Today, we’ll show you some exciting examples of both news homepage layouts and even a few for individual articles as well.

Great Grid

Here’s a prime example of CSS Grid’s fitness for a news page. It’s a 12-column layout, with a large feature story up top that takes up two-thirds of the first row.

From there, it alternates between one-third and two-thirds of stories below and a one-third listing along the right. The look creates an excellent balance and allows each story to stand out.

Artistic Touch

These newfangled CSS techniques are often used to imitate classic print layouts. This magazine layout uses Flexbox to add retro shapes, multicolumn flowing text and a large featured image.

A Fully-Visual Experience

This article layout looks attractive yet reasonably standard at first glance. A massive image on the left is paired with nice typography on the right. But start scrolling, and you’ll see what makes this one stand out.

The first section of text scrolls as the image stays in place. Go further, and you’re met with full-width images and multiple columns of text. It’s a clever design that will keep readers interested.

Big Steps

The modern age of news sites has made visual stories, ones without a lot of text, quite popular. Here’s an interesting layout that could be a great fit for explaining multistep processes or listing the popular posts of the day.

Masonry Blocks

This CSS Grid-based masonry layout of posts has several things going for it. First, the layout is complex – but without being disorienting. The use of faded background images and legible typography make it easy to distinguish one article from the next. And the stunning hover effects make for a fun and effective user experience.

Break Past Your Limits

So-called “break out” sections are a popular feature within articles. They are great for adding emphasis to important quotes or even images. But the CSS used to require all sorts of hacks to get an element to go beyond a fixed-width container.

That is until CSS Grid came along. This example demonstrates just how easy it is to integrate into your layout.

Barebones

Sometimes it’s nice to see an example layout that eschews content. This makes it easier to grasp, especially if you’re just learning a new technique such as CSS Grid.

With a clear outline of each container and helpful terminology, you’ll gain a better understanding of how this one was put together.

Pretty Posts

Post grids are a terrific solution for both news websites and blogs. A well-designed one is easy to read, provides some whitespace, and adds interactivity.

All of those traits are well-represented here. The clean card layout is easy on the eyes, while the hover effects give it a high tech feel.

Designing a news-oriented website can be a real challenge. It requires a strategy for getting your best content in front of users while ensuring that it entices them to click. And, once they are reading an article, you want to provide them with the best experience possible.

Thankfully, CSS layouts have never been more capable of helping you achieve these goals. Looks that used to be reserved for desktop publishing software are now easily replicated – as many of the snippets above demonstrate.

The first step is to take some time to think about how you want to present your content. From there, you can use one of these examples as a starting point to make it come to life.

The next time you browse through popular print/paper newspapers or magazines, take note of how varied the page layouts tend to be from one to another. Some page layouts are crisp, clean, and highly readable.

Others are a little more stylish, artsy perhaps. Yet, they all adhere to the highest design standards and present content clearly, compactly, and beautifully.

Maintaining those high standards can’t be easy but is consistently achieved. And more often than not, those high design standards are reflected in their web versions, often pushing innovation as they do so, especially as they have to deliver content to so many different devices and screen sizes.

Magazine-style website design is a very popular layout style, yet quite often, those websites don’t draw inspiration from offline magazines. An excellent way to find out what works best is to take a closer look at popular online magazines, as those responsible for designing the printed editions often contribute to the design of the online magazines’ layouts as well.

While all are aesthetically pleasing, each of the below magazine-style websites has a creative and highly unique layout, they all put user experience first, and all are prime examples of consistency in design. This is how magazine-style web design should be done.

Time

The Time homepage draws heavily on visuals, but that has always been the case with the printed version of this magazine throughout its history. The web designers have, however, managed to present the viewer with a multitude of choices while at the same time avoiding a cluttered appearance.

One of the secrets to the success of this website’s usability and readability is the reliance on visual hierarchy. The visitor can always see what the featured story of the moment is.

Time magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

The Verge

Call it a mosaic or a jigsaw puzzle, but The Verge’s homepage design gives you a quick picture of what’s inside and gets you where you want to go quickly.

The layout is pleasing to the eye as well. And skimming through the listing of articles takes but a second or two. The inner pages are sometimes broken up into carousels of image thumbnails – making it easy to drill down to a specific story or topic of interest.

The Verge magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

The New Yorker

Fans of the paper version of The New Yorker won’t be disappointed in the layout of the online version. The primary focus is placed on the content, and the layout style is minimalist and appealing.

The New Yorker’s typography is familiar, as the typography of the printed version has been consistently maintained throughout the site. This magazine does an excellent job of making its online viewers feel right at home.

The New Yorker magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

Wired

Wired’s website demonstrates an almost uncanny ability to take a huge selection of wildly varied themes (even though most appear to be geek-oriented), and arrange them in a way that actually makes for comfortable viewing and excellent readability.

This is accomplished through the skillful use of column widths, spacing, padding, comfortable use of white space, and a sans-serif font that is pleasing to the eye. Font size also gives an indication to which articles are most likely to be of interest to most viewers. Consistency is the rule, and all the various parts form a cohesive whole throughout the site.

Wired magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

Newsweek

Newsweek’s website is thoughtfully structured, but it comes with a beautfiully designed responsive version as well, so you can thumb through its articles while on the go.

This is particularly good news for mobile users since this magazine is noted for its many excellent articles and images. It does a great job of putting everything together.

Newsweek magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

Bloomberg

Bloomberg.com has become a digital destination for many because of its ability to deliver a news experience that offers up-to-date news and does so in a modern, user-friendly format.

Visitors especially like the way in which this online magazine, built for today’s global web consumer skillfully unifies its most powerful media assets.

Bloomberg magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

GQ

Those who are regular readers of GQ, and who have grown used to the stylish way in which the content in the offline version is presented, will find the same familiar look in the online version.

Not surprisingly, the first thing you see is a fashion-imagery banner that stretches across the width of the page. Scroll down, and the list of articles are nicely laid out in a stylish grid.

GQ magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

National Geographic

The online version of National Geographic doesn’t disappoint. The site boasts a simplistic design, and it showcases large images together with an easy-to-read selection of fonts.

National Geographic magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

Road & Track

Road and Track magazine has long been popular with car enthusiasts for its insightful articles and fantastic images. The editors of this magazine obviously came ready to play when the decision was made to create the online version.

The great articles and stunning photography are still there, together with a highly convenient static navigation bar.

Road & Track magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair redesigned its website a year ago, and the results were more than satisfactory. The new online version does an excellent job of combining lengthy articles, for which the magazine is noted, with quick-take news items, slide shows, videos, and more.

The website editors also took note of the fact that many visitors were browsing on mobile devices. They took great pains to make the content look fantastic on all platforms – and they were hugely successful.

Vanity Fair magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

Los Angeles Times

The LA Times has succeeded in creating one of the largest responsive websites ever built. Readers can get the same world-class experience in reading one of the world’s largest newspapers on any device or screen size.

To do so, the web designers dispensed with the traditional page grid. Instead, the newspapers’ marquee journalism is highlighted, clutter has been eliminated, and greater focus is placed on the paper’s unique voices and multimedia.

Los Angeles Times magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

The Next Web

The Next Web (TNW) is presented in a solid one page website format with a bold design. It does an excellent job of balancing business needs with a strong UX.

Content is front and center, there is plenty of it, yet there is not a sign of clutter.

The Next Web magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

Entrepreneur

Entrepreneur, the definitive guide to meeting the challenges of business ownership, has been on the newsstands for 30 years, but the online edition is definitely modern in its layout.

The homepage may not be particularly innovative, but the layout is straightforward and easy to follow. Published monthly, this magazine is available both in print and on a mobile app.

Entrepreneur magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

Ad Age

From its beginnings as a broadsheet Chicago newspaper in 1930, to its becoming a global publication, Ad Age is now available in both print and online editions – along with daily and weekly e-mail newsletters.

Except for the highlighted article, topics are given equal space until you scroll down a page or two, after which many of them are listed as line items. The Ad Age layout is one that would be easy to emulate.

Ad Age magazine web design layout newspaper inspiration

One of these examples or a combination of one or two might work well for you. Just remember the importance of consistency in design.

Blogs on the Internet are becoming are easiest way to consume news & information. Many web designs are responsive which allows reading on mobile devices, and you aren’t even paying for the privilege. The popularity of simple open source CMS’ like WordPress makes it even easier to launch your own project online.

In this guide I want to look at some WordPress themes as examples for current blogging design trends. By studying these current trends designers may also speculate potential changes for the future. The Internet has grown so quickly in a very short time period – who can really know for certain what the next phase will be?

You might also like to view this gallery of beautifully designed personal blog websites.

Obscure Homepages

Something that has always caught my attention is the uncertain design pattern on blog homepages. Often you will find some large heading panel with featured articles, possibly rotating or shifting between stories. There is also usually a set of different cascading post displays focused on categories, recent topics, popular articles, or even specific authors.

valenti wordpress premium theme design wp

The new Valenti theme is a good example of this complex homepage layout. The first 5 posts are displayed in a block-level thumbnail widget. But you’ll also find a small image rotator beneath this, followed by some latest posts and then columns of post categories. In some cases you will find yourself way too confused at the mass of content strewn across the page.

When considering your homepage design make sure that it’s easy to follow along. As a reader myself I can imagine being too overwhelmed by the complexity and just leaving a website before reading anything. But if you plan well then you may be surprised how many people actually like the semi-disheveled style of skimmable homepages.

Trending Posts

Popular breaking news and trending topics are sometimes displayed as news tickers. These will show one post headline at a time for just a few seconds before moving onto the next one. Definitely check out the header on Manshet to get a better conceptual idea.

manshet premium wordpress theme homepage breaking news

This design is really cool because it features the news ticker along with a slideshow of breaking news. This has post thumbnails to draw more attention than just plain text. But all of these elements appear towards the top of the page. It’s an area above-the-fold which visitors will notice right away.

I feel like this idea only works on a blog or magazine with a lot of content. Meaning typically more than 1-2 posts each day. If your blog is constantly publishing news articles then you need a method to differentiate the more popular stories from milder ones. These top headline sliders and news tickers are definitely one trendy solution.

Prominent Author Features

Weblogs have always been partially about the author behind the website. Readers who fall in love with a blog eventually try to learn more about the writer. blogs do try to make this a lot easier with more featured details promoting the authors themselves.

You will notice articles that include a full author bio, links to their website, and even other external links onto Twitter or Facebook. An example article from the Hickory theme includes a direct link to the author’s Twitter account underneath the post headline. It also directs to the author page itself listing all of their articles on the site.

hickory theme wordpress premium design author info

Giving readers a more intimate connection with the staff helps to build a small community around your website. Readers may come back just to check out a certain author because they really enjoy their articles. Over time you can build a reputation for your website within dynamic niches for really powerful content. Try including other social links onto Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, or whatever your writers may benefit from promoting.

Relatable Footer Content

Every website needs a footer even if it’s just one line. Sometimes this will basically focus on copyrights or simple internal page links. But an online blog is such a different beast altogether that you have to marvel in some of these footer designs.

intouch wordpress premium theme design footer api links

The screenshot above is from an example theme called InTouch built for WordPress. Notice that these are most likely footer widgets, but they format perfectly into columns based on the responsive design. You can definitely include simple elements like tag clouds, site information, and links to contact/company pages.

But also notice the connection into 3rd party services like Instagram or Flickr. You can pull data from your own account using APIs and display these into widgets on the page. A website’s footer may be the best placement because it won’t get in the way of your main content or advertising space. The goal is to make your footer relatable to the viewer. Make them feel like your blog is just a typical website, big or small, and present content which will keep them engaged for a little while longer.

Reviews & Ratings

I think that any product in regards to movies, music, gaming, food, books, has the ability to be reviewed. People thinking of buying or consuming something may want to know what your blog thinks of it first. And so internally-powered review features have become very prominent within online blogs.

These reviews typically come from the author who may leave some positive and negative feedback. It could be presented in a 5-star rating, or in a numerical system which talks about different properties(acting, directing, screenwriting, music, etc).

video game review flavor theme premium wordpress

It’s interesting because this theme also allows users to vote on each of the stories as well. This means any review post has the author’s rating along with the collective readership’s rating value. If your blog has a tremendous audience it may be worthwhile to get into reviewing products more frequently. It can sometimes lead to deals with companies or Internet publishers who need market exposure on their new product/service.

Another fantastic design example by Industrial Themes is called Steam. These reviews, much like the other theme, include ratings for various aspects of the product itself. And it also features little trophies or detail icons which explain the type of content in the product.

steam magazine theme wordpress premium screenshot review article

For one example looking at this video game review you’ll find icons for details like underwater gameplay and multiplayer support. This is a really cool feature but it’s not always going to be necessary, depending on how many things you review. Sometimes it is easier for a blog to keep it simple and provide one single rating value – then leave all the detailed explanations for the article content itself.

Regardless, it should be understood that blogs are adopting this review & rating system, along with simpler interfaces like total view counts or total likes on a single article(internal likes not Facebook likes). If you feel these added features could benefit your blog or magazine then definitely find some time and build it out! You may be surprised how many people are willing to interact with your articles, leave feedback, and even return again sometime in the future to read more.

Closing

I know these are some basic ideas since they’ve been coded into websites for a long time. But we have never seen online blogs growing so quickly – blogs which also never had their own print version in retail stores.

I do hope these suggestions may help webmasters or WordPress developers who are looking to build a useful product. Similarly, if you have any questions or comments on the topic feel free to share with us in the post discussion area below.

Specifically, news listings where you may find a dozen stories all related to different topics which are grouped together in one section. It is a favorite style because readers will peruse through these individual news feeds looking for a headline to catch their eye.

In this article, I want to look deeper at the popularity of this design style. More specifically delving into magazine homepage layouts which have become more dynamic and influential compared with blog websites 5-10 years ago. Numerous magazines have taken their publications online to support a wider audience. The benefits are tremendous if you can manage to organize a lot of content in a plentiful yet easily-accessible manner.

The Feel of a Magazine

You will notice the majority of these websites do look and feel like a digital magazine. There is no paper to hold or pages to flip, but the colors and typography mirror a printed page. Of course, this is not always the case, but you may find this design aesthetic as the perfect fit.

Readers who understand magazine designs will typically have an easier time navigating the site. You do not need to worry so much about creating a header navigation aside from categories, and even these could be appended into a sidebar. Most of your white space should be taken up by headlines and featured news.

The website layout for Brides does an excellent job conveying the printed magazine feeling. Each story has a typical thumbnail image, and there are even blocks mid-way down the page breaking up featured news and small advertisements. There is also an order form to pick up physical printed copies which can be shipped right to your house! This signup form is a good idea if you plan to offer this shipping service, which may provide a bit of extra income for the business.

The lower footer area is also typically what you would expect in a magazine. Simple, natural contrast for reading, and it contains all the links you would expect to find in a website navigation. I think the white background using dark text is an easy solution because it allows readers to print your magazine without wasting ink. So the whole website almost feels like it is a printed magazine transferred into digital content.

Embedded Post Blocks

One interesting design style is building a magazine layout with fitted content in each column. Some readers will be annoyed by scrolling through so many headlines packed into a unique box model. However the presentation is above solid, and you can leave a mark on readers who are digging for the latest breaking stories.

The website for Clutch Magazine is a nice example where the left sidebar contains secondary news pieces. Latest comments, opinion articles, advertisements, and a few other widgets will be displayed here. This leaves room for two columns of new articles organized chronologically. The layout is also a lazy loading design which will automatically append new pages via Ajax.

The new posts will eventually overtake the sidebar and fill the entire homepage with new content. This style can only work if you leave enough room for each post to manage by itself. Clutch uses thumbnails and borders around each headline to distinguish between them. I feel this only improves the “embedded” desire of sinking content into your page. Notice the fixed header toolbar also provides direct access to navigation links and the search form.

Infinite Scrolling News

I want to go back and revisit this idea of infinite scrolling news. The feature does not seem like such a big deal at first. But then after testing a layout which includes this lazy-loading interface you will never want to go back. Tumblr and Pinterest were early adopters among social networks, and it has grown quickly ever since.

UGS Mag is another example which uses the infinite scrolling effect on their homepage. The one downside is that readers are unable to copy and share permalinks to the different archive pages. Obviously, each article will have a unique URL, but it is unfortunate how the actual page listings will never get their own URL. These individual pages are not very popular, so there isn’t much to lose, but take this into consideration for each blog/magazine project you work on.

The homepage layout of UGS fits nicely with each post listing because the thumbnails are snug right up against the box. So each article is distinct and stands out from the crowd yet still comes together for a strange and frantic box pattern. Take personal needs into consideration when planning for these various layout designs and ask yourself what will best suit the website.

lazy loading footer link amusement magazine website

I think Amusement is worth adding into this topic because of their implementation. When you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will notice a link in the footer which reads “LOAD MORE”. Instead of automatically fetching new stories you have the opportunity to look through some of the footer links, and maybe decide if you even want another page to load. This lazy-load interface gives control over to the user which is a much better solution.

Mixed Thumbnails with Headlines

To move into newspaper territory consider homepage designs which feature a large collection of new articles. These may be mixed into different categories or columns on the page, and you will have bigger posts at the top using much larger font sizes. Typically these headlines represent featured posts which are promoted by the editors.

The concept of mixing a homepage news feed is to stagger important content without losing eye-candy appeal. This is masterfully accomplished on WWD Magazine’s website using a number of different columns. The main “Top Stories” reports down the center using only a single thumbnail. But you can scroll through the image slider of recent publications which is also located at the top of the page.

Giving your readers a number of selections to choose from will keep them interested for longer. And keeping visitors engaged is how you can bridge them into more interesting topics which may be found deeper in the website. The WWD magazine layout is great at implementing a wide variety of news listings. But it does have a slightly cluttered design, which could be better organized by keeping more featured articles at the top to draw attention.

The easiest way to expand your understanding of UI/UX effects is to find similar magazine websites which are already online. Look through these examples with a critical mind, considering both the great aspects and the not-so-great aspects which could use improvement. Then apply your insight towards your projects to capitalize on what the other guys are doing wrong(or could be doing better).

Final Thoughts

When designing your magazine/blog layout I hope you will consider a number of these ideas. New launches should be more focused on building content before applying nifty UI effects. However, a beautiful design will catch the eye almost immediately, and will lure plenty of new interested readers onto your homepage.

As we move forward I am hoping to see a lot more variety in online digital magazines. The older publication methods require a lot of time and paper. Distributing news via the Internet is a much more lucrative and profitable situation. The key to building up your reputation is through solid branding and a lot of great content.
